Austria had been annexed to Germany a few days earlier and in Vienna some SS were having fun humiliating a group of Jews by forcing them to kneel down and clean the ground with brushes. A man broke away from the crowd of onlookers and, with a brush in his hand, knelt down with the Jews and began the cleaning work himself. When he was ordered to stand up and show his documents, the man obeyed and stood up very calmly. There was no trace of fear in his gaze and this was interpreted by the Germans as a challenge. The SS were further angered by the statements of the man who declared himself a friend of the Jews and confirmed that he wanted to help them. The soldier in front of him was about to hit him when his comrade's hand stopped him. The officer was reading the document of the man who was daring to challenge the soldiers of the Third Reich.
